EXTENSIONS

A solid black box expands out of the ground from nothing into a duality of aspect and function, picking up more materials as it expands toward French Island and Western Port Bay. The top storey acts as a self-sufficient lookout for when it is in use by a single couple, while downstairs acts as a family extension, with focus placed on play around the pool, spa, barbeque deck and cinema. Upstairs is decadent in its finishes and complex plan while downstairs is laid out and finished more simplistically; there is a play off between warm rustic materials and contemporary innovative decadence.

This development of two townhouses sits within a quiet cul-de-sac on one side and the beach on the other. Given the incredible site, the design is squeezed at one end and expands toward the views. As a response to the harsh environment at the site, the materials palette works on the premise of 'tough on the outside, soft on the inside'; external materials are raw, robust and no maintenance, while the interior is soft on the eye and to the touch.

This design is multifaceted with varying intents of use and therefore expresses itself in multiple fragmented boxes in different materials and forms. The home will serve young and old, strangers and friends, for large family barbeques in the yard and solitary reading by the fire over short and long periods. The one consolidating ideal is to connect the inhabitants with the spectacular landscape, being the immediate densely planted site and Mallacoota inlet beyond.

Despite its exuberant appearance, the home is a modest size at 300m2 and sits low on the site with its back to the wind. The house is split up and down, left and right by a double height stair chamber to provide separation of living and sleeping quarters and the opportunity to close-off upstairs. Each space has its own micro environment with controlled views of individual gardens to provide a sense of one’s own personal space when inhabiting the home. A fine spatial balance has been struck between being able to host large parties while also feeling a sense of cosiness.

CONCEPT PHASE

This new Jarchitecture development is located in Bonbeach and offers great views over the Patterson River. With this design, Jarchitecture aims to offer a clean yet carefully detailed aesthetic with special focus placed on plants and filtered light. This design aims to sooth, with it's soft curves and carefully designed introverted and extroverted spaces.

This large renovation in the hills of Beaconsfield doubles the floor area for a growing family. The design is oriented to sit within planning restrictions, for maximum exposure to the surrounding landscape and light while turning it’s back to nearby properties. This house is designed for play with multiple breakout zones, significant outdoor areas and storage for big boys toys.

CONCEPT PHASE

This Jarchitecture renovation project is located in Edithvale and offers great views to Edithvale Beach. The clients requested a clean contemporary design with modest palette and maximized views to the water. The dwelling has been transformed from a weatherboard pitched roof design with meager appearance to a multi-faceted diffused design that gives the home an assured presence.

DOCUMENTATION PHASE

A steeply sloping site, surrounded by trees in Ringwood, is the location of this proposal for a new three bedroom dwelling. The two volumes are cut back into the ground and are separated by a large central courtyard and pool. This pool-centric design allows for an abundance of natural light and complete engagement with the surrounding landscape. The textured brick and corten steel material palette is both tactile and robust.
